...why can't stuff just work Sad

Older technology worked better... the more advanced it gets, the more complex and so bug ridden it becomes. Just one of those things. Wink

Well it concerns me that it still isn't working for people. It's working fine for me. I'm going to have to contact them again, and it pisses me off because I paid for server space it should work.  Angry

Maybe its only me now. Maybe its because I'm in the UK. The Atlantic makes a difference even to the internet.

It isn't easy when I'm posting a message and the forum freezes (not my computer, because I can copy the words to paste again when I reload the forum - my connection doesn't fail either... the forum simply freezes and I have to reload the page... I did get a message about timing out once... but I don't wait that long before pressing reload now).

Like I say, this is the only forum my connection has this issue with.

Just got the...

'Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Web Page' message.

Most likely causes... it tells me...

1... You are not connected to the Internet. (Oh yes I am - lol).
2... The Website is Encountering Problems. (I think so).
3... There Might be a Typing Error in the Adress. (Erm... how am I here then - lol).

Nocti, what kind of line are you on? And do you have a router. You might want to restart the router.

And is this the only site you have problems with? Does I2 give you problems, for example?

I am on Broadband cable.
I do not have a router.
I2 is just slow but not slow enough to be a problem presently.

This is the ONLY forum that times out on me. Indeed the ONLY site that times out on me. And that is every session I spend here.

It happens with no other forum I visit. This forum often freezes up on me and times out. Is anybody else finding this... if so, it might be to do with the forum server, I guess.

I frequent eight + fora and 4 of those very regularly... and I don't get this issue with them.

It happened to me tonight, but it was only for a few minutes. I have to say though that Gestalt and I2 have both had times when they've timed out.

I've known Gestalt to crash... I do not believe I've ever known Gestalt to 'Time Out'... and neither of them do so presently.

This Forum Times out/freezes on me EVERY time I visit within minutes of my visit. It froze when I first tied posting this very post!!!

Freezing is usually indicative of a local issue (problem with the browser, PC, etc). Timing Out could be any number of problems ranging from the hosting server, to the local user's router/modem, to even their ISP's equipment or anything inbetween causing the data to be delayed or hung up which then forces the software to return a time out.

Most of the time data is sent to a maximum 30 devices or 'hops'. So for example you post something on the forum, you send it from your computer/local gateway to your ISP which then forward it onto the next router and the next, and so forth until it reaches the server where the forum is hosted. If for some reason it doesn't make it in 30 'hops' it'll time out. That's a simple way of explaining (as I'm sure far more complex than that, but that's how it was explained to me).

So it's entirely possible there may be an issue between the hosting server and your ISP, or with any number of devices in between. Maybe you could try doing a Trace Route to see if there are any problem 'hops'?

Now that sounds like it would be quite interesting to do... however, I haven't the foggiest how to do it.

There's the Command Line option:
A nice how-to

For a web-based option try network-tools.
EDIT: This one only works for IP addresses, so you'd need to do an IP lookup on this site's URL... Which you could via Command Line using Ping... eh just use the first one Tongue

Done the Traceroute.

None of the merely 14 hops whatsoever timed out. Hmmm.

It even looked in much better shape (and fewer/quicker hops) than the example on that site Undecided

I do not see how it could be a local problem since it ONLY applies when visiting this very site and no other.

The route to each site is different, so when there's a time out it may not necessarily be the host server.

But anyways I'm not sure what the problem is though... I've not experienced this timing out barring the first time as said above.
